A Miners Gamble

Posted in Miner on Mar 23, 2018 by Anthracite

The earth has fallen on me, it’s dark and timbers still groan

Fear hurts more than the rocks resting on me and I feel them sigh

Digging in this hole feeds my family and stops the rich man’s moan

But buried under these tons, I dig because I don’t know how to say goodbye

Not afraid of the dark or that my legs are gone but rather which way is up

Some things are acceptable and I may never walk again but neither will I fly

My breath tastes the black dust that has been my friend but I need out of this club

Because I can’t go yet, I’m just not ready, I haven’t practiced how to say goodbye

The moaning stops and the only sound is the blood in my ears as I contemplate solipsism

I might be blind as I scratch against the dark rock, with my dark hands and I know I cry

There will be remorse from a rich man for a short while as he makes use of the system

And as a million tons take my life from me I despair I will never be able to say goodbye.

The Platypus

Posted in Animals on Mar 16, 2018 by Anthracite

A bill just like a duck but they never ever quack

They have many names but not Steve, Bob, Wendy or Jack

What a curious wee thing this furry mallangong

But if you’re from Victoria you might say its a Dulaiwarrung!

Platypuses are awesome swimmers and the babies are the same

But a baby Platypus is called a baby Platypus and has no special name

Just like its mum and dad it has a wide wee tail and four stubby legs

And it’s quite amazing ‘cause they are mammals that pop out of an egg!

Swimming around with four webbed feet if it’s shallow or if there’s a flood

They have to look for food when dirty using their bills feel and dig in the mud

So they close their eyes and ears under water which is really kind of kind of funny

But in the creek they get lots of food which is weird as they don’t have a tummy!

Old Doctor Shaw in 1799 thought they’re not real and that it was a joke

He thought someone was having him on and it was some fun amongst the blokes

Because all the Platypuses are awake at night and sleep 14 hours a day

Luck for us its very true so next time you’re by the creek stop by and say “Gidday!”

Otters!

Posted in Animals on Mar 12, 2018 by Anthracite

I love Otters

They can open a hard shell

In the middle of the ocean

Floating on their back

I bet you can do that

I love Otters

They can dive up to 300 feet

A million hairs per square inch

And a mob of them is called a Romp

I bet we’d all love to do that

I love Otters

They can hold their breath for ages

And mums will adopt the orphans

It seems they are smarter than us

Make us look dumb, I just love that.

Taking Steps

Posted in Life on Mar 12, 2018 by Anthracite

Take a few steps into my mind with me

Embrace my madness where 1 equals 3

It’s not so bad once you’re here with me

You cannot see the wood for the trees

Amongst the flotsam and froth of the sea

Maybe there are little bits of you and me

It’s not madness if you share my tea

So please take a few steps

And set me free

Maybe you’re a God

On bleeding knees the faithful feel no pain

The sinews in their arms are tight, reaching up

To you who all hope is given to so willingly

Their sacrifice a currency to justify their faith

The tears are as salty as the blood shed for you

No questions are drafted to investigate the payment

Yet there are coaches lined up with hopeful passengers

And teachers scare little children in your name

A curriculum of fear is used to determine and build faith

So prayers and our young are given to a God swinging smite

The pain is a suffering made into a rule that must be followed

And with 3000 gods wretchedness and sacrifices are still petitioned

While birds sing and clouds bounce their way across the sky

Mothers prey for their children to not befall disfavour of the robe

All-powerful, all mighty, full of discipline and benevolence

Perhaps a simulacrum, or maybe you are actually a god

But I know, you are not.
